 La Posidonia: the lung of the Mediterranean

Pro Voyages highlights its greener suppliers and proposes adding Corporate Social Responsibility actions to its event programs in the Balearics. Among these: the protection of the Posidonia.

What is Posidonia? No, it is not an alga, contrary to what you might think. Posidonia is an aquatic plant, present in the Mediterranean, which covers 25% of the seabed. The Pitiusas Islands, Ibiza and Formentera, have one of the best-preserved oceanic prairies in the Mediterranean. The meadows in the Natural Park of Ses Salines in Formentera is declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

This plant has a multitude of fundamental functions for the marine environment. Among them: the production of oxygen in its ecosystem and water purification. The transparent waters that make the Balearic beaches a paradise? It is thanks to Posidonia. Unfortunately, man has become an expert in the destruction nature. And the Mediterranean is no exception. It has had a degradation of approximately 30% of Posidonia fields in the last 100 years. The causes: pollution, the construction of a large urban infrastructure, fishing activities and the moorage of boats that sterile this plant with its anchors.

Fortunately, several actors worried about preserving this plant that makes our seabed a true paradise are implementing actions and are fighting tirelessly to stop this ecological disaster.
